Questions from foreigners in Czechia

Health insurance questions, clearly answered.

Practical answers for visa applicants, students, expats and families. Because the correct route depends on your personal status, use these answers as a starting point and verify important requirements with the competent authority.

Choosing the right insurance

Do all foreigners need commercial health insurance in Czechia?

No. The correct route depends on nationality, residence status, employment, age and international agreements. People participating in Czech public health insurance, and some people covered by EHIC, GHIC, an S1 form or an international programme, may follow a different route.

What is the difference between public and commercial health insurance?

Public health insurance is governed by Czech law and may arise through qualifying employment, permanent residence or another statutory category. Commercial insurance is a contract with defined limits, exclusions, assistance procedures and policy conditions.

Can I use EHIC or GHIC in the Czech Republic?

EU, EEA, Swiss and eligible UK visitors may use EHIC or GHIC for medically necessary public healthcare under the applicable rules. It does not automatically replace every insurance requirement or cover every cost, so check your residence and travel situation.

How do I know which Slavia product is available to me?

Enter accurate information in the official Slavia calculator. It displays the options and current price available for the entered situation. Read the product information and policy terms before concluding the contract.

Visa and residence applications

What insurance is required for a stay longer than 90 days?

For relevant long-term visa and residence applications, the official rules may require comprehensive travel medical insurance for the required period. Current requirements depend on where the application is filed and whether an exemption applies.

Is there a minimum insurance limit for a long-term visa?

The Information Portal for Foreigners currently states a minimum agreed limit of EUR 400,000 per insured event for the relevant comprehensive travel medical insurance, without cost sharing by the insured person. Always verify the rule for your exact application.

When do I submit proof of insurance?

For many applications filed at a Czech diplomatic mission, proof is submitted before the visa is placed in the passport. An application filed or extended inside Czechia can follow a different process. Follow the instructions from the competent authority.

Can the authority ask for proof that I paid the premium?

Yes. The authority may request proof of payment, so save the policy confirmation, payment receipt and all documents generated during the official application.

Does a foreign insurance contract need a Czech translation?

A contract concluded abroad may require an officially certified Czech translation of the agreement and general terms. Check the current official instructions before submitting documents.

Students and families

Do international students need Czech commercial insurance?

Many non-EU students who are not part of Czech public health insurance need suitable commercial cover for a visa or residence application. EU, EEA and Swiss students may have a different route through EHIC or other coordination rules.

Can students receive a special price?

A student option may be available to eligible applicants. Eligibility and the current price are confirmed by the official calculator; do not rely on an old price list.

What dates should a student enter?

The insurance period should cover the period required for the visa or residence process. Compare the dates with the university admission documents and instructions from the embassy or Ministry of the Interior.

Are children under 18 covered by public health insurance?

A minor holding a valid Czech long-term residence permit can enter the Czech public health insurance system under statutory conditions. The transition and start date must be checked carefully so that the child is not left without coverage.

After purchase and medical care

Where is the insurance contract concluded?

All purchase buttons on this website continue to an application hosted on the official slavia-pojistovna.cz domain. The available product, price, cover and contractual conditions are confirmed there.

What should I do before visiting a doctor?

Except in a genuine emergency, check your policy instructions and contact the assistance service if required. Confirm the provider and payment procedure and take your passport, insurance documents and assistance number.

What is the Slavia assistance number for foreigners?

Slavia currently lists +420 255 790 262 for health insurance for foreigners, available 24/7 in several languages. Verify the contact on your insurance card and the current Slavia service page.

What should I do in a life-threatening emergency?

Call 155 for emergency medical services or 112 for the European emergency line. Explain what happened, give your exact location and follow the operator's instructions.

Can I speak to a doctor online?

Eligible Slavia clients may use the uLékaře.cz online medical consultation service in Czech or English and request assistance with arranging an appointment. Current eligibility is governed by Slavia's service information.

Which documents should I keep after treatment?

Keep medical reports, prescriptions, original invoices, proof of payment, referrals, prior approvals and communication with the assistance service. The exact claim procedure is governed by your policy terms.
